MALAWI MISSION - The Story of Bashir Sumaes: From Darkness to Hope

August 19, 2026 by Raquel Magalso

Just three kilometers from the LFJ Children’s Centre in Malawi is a small village where Bashir Sumaes grew up. His childhood changed forever when his father was killed during a robbery. Soon after, his mother left to look for work and never returned, leaving Bashir, his five siblings, and their elderly grandmother behind. When their grandmother passed away, Bashir dropped out of school and began fishing on a nearby lake just to provide food for his younger brothers and sisters.

In 2022, everything changed. While fishing, Bashir heard about the newly opened LFJ Children's Centre. He came seeking a safe place to stay and, by God's grace, was welcomed into the orphanage. He was able to return to school and began building a new future.

Although grateful for his new home, Bashir couldn't stop thinking about his younger brother, Muhammad, who was still struggling in the village. When our caregivers learned about his situation, they welcomed Muhammad into the Centre as well. Having his brother by his side brought Bashir great joy.

At the LFJ Children's Centre, both boys studied the Bible and came to know Jesus personally. Bashir eventually chose to be baptized, giving his life to Christ. Today, he is the first child from our Centre to attend high school at Chileka Adventist Boarding School—a milestone that once seemed impossible.

Bashir's story is a testimony of what God can do through love, compassion, and faithful supporters.

Thank you to everyone who continues to pray for and invest in the lives of our children. Your generosity is helping write stories of hope, one child at a time.
