A Day in The Life of Missionaries

Moruca is an Amerindian region in Guyana, about sixty miles northwest of the town of Charity. To get there, you must first travel 22 miles toward the mouth of the majestic Pomeroon River, then cross eight miles of ocean, and then journey another 30 miles up the winding Moruca River. The heart of this large area is the community of Kumaka. Moruca is divided into three administrative areas, each led by its own toshao (indigenous leader), and while the region is predominantly Catholic, there are a few other Christian denominations present, including a small group of Seventh-day Adventists.

Our landlady is a member of the Seventh-day Adventist church. She and my wife and I begin most days together with a devotional time, so that is the first thing we do today. After our time of prayer and reflection, we usually head out into the community to share literature, offer Bible studies, and pray with people. We are currently sharing Bible studies with ten families. While some people have turned us away, most welcome us with open arms, eager to dive into Scripture and ask questions.

“How many studies do we have scheduled today?” my wife asks as we prepare to go out.

“Today we have three,” I reply, smiling. Some days we only do one Bible study, but we often do as many as four studies. We involve the people in each session, letting them read, share their thoughts, and ask questions. It’s not just about teaching; it is about learning together, growing together, and allowing God to guide the conversation.

A few days ago, out on our rounds, we met a man named Mr. Gonsalves, who suffers from severe back pain. We prayed for his healing, exchanged phone numbers, and promised to visit him. Today, we
go to find his house, but somehow get lost along the way. I am frustrated at first, but my wife reassures me, “Maybe God has other plans for us today.” And she is right. As we wander, we find ourselves at Anthony’s house instead. Little do we know, he has been searching for spiritual guidance. He and his wife are ready to recommit their lives to Jesus, along with a mother and daughter who live nearby. Four people in total accept Christ today!* “We never would have found Anthony if we hadn’t gotten lost,” my wife marvels after we leave. “To God be the glory,” I nod, feeling humbled by how He works in mysterious ways. As we continue to serve here in Moruca, our hearts are full. We love working for God and are determined to remain faithful in His service, knowing that each day brings us one step closer to His kingdom. We ask for your prayers, that God will grant us the wisdom and strength to face the challenges ahead as we strive to be faithful ambassadors for Him. May the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be with us all as we work for Him.

*Anthony and his wife were later baptized on August 14.
